Is there an over-the-counter alternative to Wegovy?
The short answer is no. Wegovy, Zepbound, the Wegovy pill, Foundayo and every other GLP-1 medicine need a prescription in the US, and nothing sold over the counter works the same way. That is frustrating if you were hoping to skip the doctor's office, but it is also useful to know, because it means anything on a shelf or a website claiming to be an over-the-counter Wegovy is either something much weaker or something you should not put in your body.
The one FDA-approved over-the-counter weight-loss medicine
Orlistat, sold over the counter as Alli, is the only weight-loss medicine the FDA has approved for sale without a prescription. It works in a completely different way from GLP-1 medicines: instead of quieting appetite, it blocks some of the fat you eat from being absorbed. The average weight loss with orlistat is modest, a few percent of body weight, and the side effects are the ones you would expect from fat passing through, including oily, urgent bowel movements, especially after a fatty meal. It can be a reasonable small step for some people. It is not a substitute for a GLP-1.
What about supplements sold as a natural Ozempic?
Berberine, so-called GLP-1 boosters, fiber blends and probiotic drinks marketed with Ozempic-style language are supplements, not medicines. The FDA does not approve supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold, and none of them has shown anything close to the weight loss seen with prescription GLP-1 medicines in large trials. Some contain fiber that can help you feel fuller, which is fine as far as it goes. The marketing comparison to Wegovy is the problem.
Semaglutide sold online without a prescription
Websites and social media sellers offering semaglutide or tirzepatide with no prescription, often labeled for research use only, are the real danger here. The FDA has warned that these products may be counterfeit, contaminated or the wrong dose, and there is no provider checking whether the medicine is safe for you. Our grey-market GLP-1 guide explains how to spot them.
The fastest legitimate route
What most people actually want from an over-the-counter option is speed and privacy: no waiting room, no awkward appointment. Licensed telehealth gets close to that. You answer a medical questionnaire online, a licensed provider reviews it and decides whether a GLP-1 is appropriate for you, and if it is, the prescription goes to a pharmacy that ships to your door. Our list of questions to ask before buying a GLP-1 online helps you tell a real program from a risky one, and Wegovy alternatives compares every prescription option.
